Musk and Trump – tearing our country apart

Elon Musk and Donald Trump are not just reckless or misguided—they are two of the most destabilizing forces in the modern world. In an era when democratic values and technological progress should be advancing hand in hand, these two men have instead used their wealth and influence to undermine institutions, spread misinformation, and erode public trust. They are not builders; they are dismantlers. And their destruction is catching up with them.

Musk, once celebrated as a revolutionary entrepreneur, has strayed far from his roots as an innovator. The man who once promised to lead humanity into a future of sustainable energy and interplanetary travel is now more focused on stoking division and engaging in online feuds than on technological progress.

His stewardship of Tesla has turned chaotic, with his erratic management decisions leading to plunging sales, disillusioned investors, and an exodus of talent. His once-loyal customer base is shrinking, particularly in Europe, where his far-right political leanings have turned off buyers who once saw him as an environmental leader.

His long-promised innovations—robotaxis, fully autonomous driving, affordable electric vehicles—remain elusive, more marketing hype than reality. Meanwhile, competitors from China, the U.S., and Europe are leaving Tesla behind, producing cheaper, better, and safer electric vehicles. Multiple companies in China have created EVs that are superior to Teslas and much less expensive. Tesla’s market share in China is declining as Chinese brands gain popularity.  Chinese-built Teslas have lower build quality.

Tesla’s stock has plummeted, erasing billions from Musk’s fortune. The market is finally waking up to what many engineers and industry experts have been saying for years: Musk is not the genius he claims to be. He speaks with certainty, but his predictions are often wildly wrong, and his execution deeply flawed.

And then there’s his mismanagement of Twitter, now called X, a social platform he transformed from a leading digital town square into a breeding ground for hate speech and conspiracy theories. His reckless gutting of content moderation has driven away advertisers, slashed the company’s valuation, and made X a platform of diminishing relevance. Instead of using the technology at his disposal to connect and inform, Musk has turned it into a megaphone for his personal grievances and extremist sympathies.

Now, Musk has aligned himself with Donald Trump, a man who has similarly built his career on self-mythologizing, deception, and the exploitation of public trust. Since his return to the White House, Trump has escalated his war on democratic institutions, purging government agencies, targeting political opponents, and emboldening extremists. Musk, eager to secure government contracts and protect his own interests, has willingly played along, lending his support to an administration that is openly hostile to democracy.

The partnership between Musk and Trump is not just ideological—it is transactional. Musk has used his platforms and wealth to amplify Trump’s message, while Trump has rewarded Musk by gutting regulatory agencies and allowing him to operate unchecked. Just as Musk hollowed out Twitter, he is now helping Trump do the same to the federal government.

The danger they pose is not just political; it is systemic. They share a fundamental disregard for the principles that sustain both democracy and innovation: accountability, transparency, and the pursuit of the public good. Musk’s vision of the future is one in which he alone dictates the rules, free from oversight, criticism, or consequence. Trump’s vision is one in which he alone holds power, above the law and immune to the will of the electorate.

But neither man is invincible. Musk’s empire is crumbling under the weight of his mismanagement, and Tesla is no longer the force it once was. His influence in the tech world is diminishing as his failures mount. Trump, too, is not as secure as he seems—his economic policies are faltering, his approval ratings remain low, and the cracks in his support base are growing.

Musk and Trump are imposters, masquerading as visionaries while being hopelessly out of their depth. Musk’s grand promises of AI dominance, Mars colonization, and self-driving cars are unraveling as investors and engineers alike recognize them as vaporware. Trump, meanwhile, continues to sell the same false promises he always has, relying on bluster and deception rather than competence. Both have built their reputations on illusion. The question is whether the world will fully see through them before the damage they inflict becomes irreversible.
